Mumps

A mumps outbreak on the East Coast (NY, NJ) may be spreading to Los Angeles County. Nine cases of mumps have been reported so far this year in Los Angeles County. According to the New York State Department of Health, there have been more than 2,800 confirmed and probable mumps cases in New York and 315 in New Jersey.

If your child shows any signs or symptoms of mumps, please call our office immediately at (818) 789-7181. Please check to confirm up-to-date immunization status in school age children.

Symptoms include:

  • Swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears or jaw on one or both sides of the face
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite

Complications can include:

  • Inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) in males who have reached puberty, which rarely leads to sterility
  • Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and/or tissue covering the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
  • Inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis) and/or breasts (mastitis) in females who have reached puberty
  • Temporary or permanent deafness
